National Restricted Electrical Licence

 

Program Overview

 

The national restricted electrical licence (NREL) program is designed to provide non-electrically trained persons with the skills and knowledge to obtain a restricted electrical licence to perform a restricted range of electrical work as part of their function.

 

The NREL allows the disconnection and reconnection of existing fixed wired equipment (connected to a supply of up to 650 volts), while observing and maintaining the safety of the working environment.

 

The licence does not permit you to perform electrical maintenance, faultfinding, installation, rewiring, alterations or additions to any electrical equipment or fixed wiring.

 

Program Outcomes

 

Participants will be able to demonstrate their competency in the following areas

 

· Prepare for electrical wiring termination and connection

· Connect electrical wiring

· Use electro-measuring devices to measure variables

· Maintain electro devices

· Disconnect equipment

· Connect equipment

· Perform emergency first aid

 

Program Content

 

This program involves training in but not limited to:

 

· Determination of the electrical characteristics of the equipment

· Identifying point of isolation

· Isolating equipment

· Disconnecting the equipment

· Selecting the replacement equipment

· Reconnecting the equipment

· Testing the equipment for operation and safety

 

Accreditation

 

· MEM10.2B Terminate & connect electrical wiring

· MEM12.2B - Perform Electrical/electronic measurement

· MEM18.49B - Disconnect/reconnect fixed wire equipment up to 1000 volts a.c/1500 volts d.c

 

Exclusions

 

· Completion of NREL 1 & 2 does not guarantee the awarding of electrical registration.

 

Pre-requisites

 

· Must apply for training licence, logbook and approval to commence course. Available through OCBA ( Office of Consumer and Business Affairs

· Certificate of Competency in various trades - or - evidence of competency in the foundation & core units of metals training package

· Completed employers statement form

Pre-requisites

 

· Participants must wear steel cap boots, long sleeve shirt and full length pants (eg: jeans)
