Light Up Your Future
Fifteen young people from the northern Adelaide area are getting the chance to find out the possibilities for a career in electro-technology thanks to the Light Up Your Future project.
Light Up Your Future is a partnership between Playford Alive, Training Prospects and ETSA Utilities and is fully funded for eligible participants through the State Government's South Australia Works Learn2Earn program.
The Learn2Earn program is a twelve-month pre-employment program that forms part of the South Australia Works initiative, providing connections to learning and work for South Australians who are disadvantaged in the labour market.
Learn2Earn targets young people who have left school before completing year 12 studies, and aims to re-engage them in learning that can expand their options for skills development and assists them in making successful transitions to training and/or employment.
The Light Up Your Future project is expected to run until September/October and involves a group of young men who are disengaged from education.
Wendy Leech, Apprenticeship Coordinator for ETSA, said the project delivers electro-technology and electrical training pathways to employment.
“Our apprenticeship services team held an interactive session with them at their training centre and they are being taken on tours of our Angle Park centre for powerline training apprenticeships and the Marleston electrical and electronic workshops.
“We take between 30 and 50 apprentices a year for electro-technology training and will be trying to find spaces for as many of them as we can,” she said.
Training Prospects’ General Manager, Adam Wiles, said the project would meet the needs of individual participants as well as project partners in industry and the community.
“The project combines the necessary theory training with a high level of practical project-based work, a proven way to engage and motivate young people who have become disengaged from education,” he said.
The Land Management Corporation through Playford Alive is providing the uniforms for the participants.
The City of Playford is providing a hands-on practical project for the group, which is to install a solar-powered lighting system in an open space location.
